Vision – First and Foremost

Creating a vision is the first step of our weight loss guide, this step is certainly not a requirement to lose weight, but it is the most important step when setting out on a weight loss journey. Just like any journey, it would not make sense to commence the journey without any idea of a destination in mind. This is what creating a vision is all about, to give you an idea of your destination, to clarify your desire to set out on a journey, and to pin-point a direction to set out to.

Vision is defined as “an idea or mental image of something”. In creating a vision you are building a mental image of something that is not existing, you are creating something out of nothing (how powerful is that 🙂 ). In our weight loss guide, we ask you to create a vision by measuring your current weight and writing your desired weight, this desired weight is your own creation, you are creating a mental image of yourself which does not exist. Everything we see that was created by man started off as an idea, as a mental image before it could see the light of day. It was Earl Nightingale who said “Everything begins with an idea”, we totally agree with this in respect of weight loss, you need to state your desired weight before you begin, else you will not know where you are going.

Setting our weight loss target was the first thing we did when we began our 6 month weight loss journey at the beginning of 2023. From thereon we knew where we were headed, our focus, commitment and efforts were sailing in the same direction. By setting a target weight loss , you start to reap the reward of commitment , as commitment brings along focus and purposeful effort.

If you are unsure of the weight you desire, as it often happens that you might feel a need to lose weight but not sure what weight to get to, the use of a BMI calculator could come in handy. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a method that is normally used to estimate a person’s body fat, the measured results provides a person with an indication of their body fat category e.g Obese, Overweight, Underweight or healthy. BMI can be used as a guide of where a good range for your desired weight could be. Please do not use it as a judgement on your health status as it is not entirely accurate, but a good measuring method and health indicator nonetheless.

Whew, but before creating a vision becomes complicated 🙂 , remember that you are in the driving seat at this moment. Only you can create what you would like to see in the future, only you can set a target that you will be willing to commit your efforts to its attainment. Therefore, relax and enjoy the creative process, create the best version of yourself in your mind, that version you will love even more, and if you might be having a negative image of your current weight, this is an opportunity to create a positive image of yourself. Write down the weight that mirrors that best version. This is your desired weight, this is your Vision.

That’s it for this week, losing weight can be a frustrating experience if done impulsively and not planned properly. As a first step of losing weight, we recommend that your current weight and desired weight be written somewhere visible or accessible , on a note book, sticky note on the PC monitor, on a vision board or maybe as text on your wake-up alarm.
