The Garden: August update

Hello There,

Welcome back to K&T blog, how have you been ?

It is the end of August, it is time for us to give an update on our garden. We started a vegetable garden in July and committed to provide monthly progress updates on this blog, our ultimate goal is to be able to grow some (if not most) of the vegetables we eat. This is a monument of a task because the current human culture and lifestyle is so much at odds, we are so busy, we are so on the move, we are so striving for convenience in all areas of our lives that it is near impossible to set aside time for gardening and cooking, we are just so occupied. But hey we are willing to go against the grain and give it a try.

As we thinking about today’s blog, we remembered the early days of covid-19 pandemic, most of us got the message that we needed to do better in taking care of ourselves, physically , mentally and emotionally. While the pandemic was wreaking havoc and instilling fear in our lives, it was also altering our perception of reality, it showed that health should be prioritized . We thought about the good habits that sprung from the disaster, such as gardening, exercising, cooking home meals and choosing and eating healthier foods. We wondered, are we still doing these good habits or are we slowly slipping back into pre-Covid habits? Andre Gide said “Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But since no one was listening, everything must be said again.”, we hope that we don’t need another pandemic to remind us what Covid-19 already said.

In the garden update for July , we indicated that our seedlings were trying to survive against the threats of cold weather and consumption by birds. In August, we were able protect them by adding shade nets and this has helped them to spring back to life, they are promising now 🙂 . The 15-30 minutes that we allocate daily for the garden is still sufficient, and we hope it will remain so as we are planning to add more vegetables in the coming month. On Sunday’s we spend a bit more time on the garden, it becomes a family affair as we all participate. It is amazing what nature has in store for us for our wellbeing when we give it some attention 🙂 .

That’s it for this week, eating real food is the easiest solution to losing weight and regaining health, and gardening is a sure way of getting real food, and maybe a good habit to keep for physical, emotional and mental health. Until next week, Stay blessed.
