Hello There,
Welcome back to K&T blog, how are you?
It’s been a week of excitement on our side as we continued to lose the weight we gained recently, it always feels good when you are able to identify your weight gain problem and manage to develop a solution that works for you. In this instance, simple tweaks such as reduced bread intake, reduced nibbling and snacking, and allowing at least 3 hours before eating anything after a meal seems to do the trick for us. But we know how it feels to be on the other side, it is very frustrating when you cannot figure out what is causing your weight gain and trying several solutions without success, this is where you need to be kind and patient with yourself, remember “The odds increase, the more you try.” – James clear.
This week we talk a little bit about the hormone Insulin, a very important hormone in managing our weight. Mike Collins the founder of sugaraddiction.com always says “if you want to know how to lose weight, study Insulin”, this makes so much sense when you start to understand the role of Insulin in the body. One of the key functions of Insulin is to regulate the blood sugar level, this means whenever there is a spike in blood sugar level (normally after eating those very nice and sweet things 🙂 ) Insulin will be called from the Pancreas to keep the blood sugar level stable. But here is the key, Insulin does this by moving the extra blood sugar into fat cells, which in turn makes us fatter/gain weight.
Learning about Insulin will therefore enable you to try and avoid the blood sugar spikes so that Insulin is not required to convert your extra blood sugar into fat. You will learn about the type of food to avoid (these are simple carbohydrates) and the type of food that does not raise your blood sugar levels (these are complex carbohydrates, proteins and fats). If learning about Insulin is technical, boring or you have no time for this, the simple and practical thing to do to keep your blood sugar level and Insulin low is to avoid junk and processed foods as they are main culprits in rapidly raising blood sugar, and by choosing whole food as they have minimal impact in raising blood sugar and therefore reduce the calling and release of Insulin, the fat storage hormone, the hormone that is good and bad at the same time.
That’s it for this week, Insulin has many important roles in the body, but it is especially of interest when it comes to its role in weight management because of its fat storing capability. Learning how it works is adding another artillery for combatting weight gain, it is worth the time. Until next week, stay blessed.
